One of the last property auctions of the 2019 calendar year is scheduled for an English-style homestead, originally the home of the Southern Tablelands Hunt Club.
The owners are retiring in the new year and are determined to sell the property at 680 Gums Lane Yass, NSW on Saturday 14 December via rural specialist agent George Southwell of Ray White Rural Yass and Canberra.
‘Beckford’, named after Sir Peter Beckford the English father of modern fox hunting, has a strong history with horses and is currently the home of champion carriage driving horses competing across Australia and in the UK.
“The home lends itself to horse owners with its four large stables, tack room, wash bay, all weather arena, machinery shed, nine paddocks, two dams and a solar bore. The Capital Region has the highest number of horses per capita, after all,” Mr Southwell said.
It could also be offered as a bed and breakfast, commercial dog boarding kennels or equine spelling and agistment.
Evidence of the English influences on the property are visible in the interior and exterior of the home.
“Established English garden of roses, deciduous trees, and wisterias complement the cathedral ceilings, adzed beams and English architectural features in the three-bedroom home, and the one-bedroom cottage,” the agent said.
“But it’s the views from the homestead that really get you, particularly from the loft and balcony. If feels as though you own 10,000 hectares not 38. You can see for days across the Yass Valley, and out to the Brindabellas.”
Current owners Gail Bain and Barry Topple are proud of the property’s fame as the home of the Beckford Chicken Runs.
“For some years the property was the home of the Beckford Chicken Runs, a cross country competition, providing an introduction to the sport of eventing to competitors as young as fice and providing fun to some in their seventies. There are numerous current riders who started their eventing career at Beckford,” Barry Topple said.
“We’ve been at Beckford for 20 wonderful years and will be very sad to leave but the time has come to downsize – our new property is just five acres! We’ve always been involved with horses and the Beckford Chicken Runs we ran for many years are still remembered by so many. We’ve travelled widely and are still to find comparable unrivalled views – many a time we’ve toasted them with a relaxing G&T. We’ll miss Beckford but hope the new owners enjoy it as much as we have,” Gail Bain said.
“Christmas buyers have the advantage of my owners’ plans to downsize imminently. As a result the pricing for the beautiful lifestyle retreat with vistas for days will make the buyer’s December all the more festive,” agent George Southwell said.
The price guide for the property is $1.3M+.
The home is one hour from Canberra Airport, and equipped for all seasons.
